He Said, She Said Journalism
After reading the article on journalism and the issue of spin coverage and the "he said, she said" theory, i found it a really interesting article. I find that especially now, the media is is having a real issue with running stories that focus on what is the right info, instead of sitting in the middle and having people basically choose sides in their news. With all of the problems of media bias, i think some organizations are trying to not look like a biased organization, but the reader then just gets two conflicting views and no real answers. i think journalists owe it to the readers and viewers of their work that they should get the real story, while avoiding the trap of biases. Just present the facts, and people will listen.

Great title for your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteYour point about outlets trying not to look biased is spot-on. It's sad that stories get labeled as "biased" without any merit. Unfortunately, it's the buzz-word that gets tossed around when someone writes any article that is the least bit controversial.
Bias is one of those tricky words in our culture, like propaganda. What do they mean? Most of us have immediate, bad reactions if we are labeled to be biased to to produce propaganda?
ReplyDeleteFact is, we're ALL biased. Everything we do is biased. We can't be otherwise. So, instead of worrying so much about a bias maybe we should focus more in fairness and the bigger picture - telling people what is important.
I think that's what journalists owe to their readers.
